Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament

Between centrifugal and centripetal nuclear forces: the role of Latin-America

The second phase of this project, in an international context where the last five years have been the scene of a high level of uncertainty in the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and with the imminence of the NPT-2010, seeks to study the forces that have prevailed in the debate. The main areas of research are related to the nuclear actors involved, the regional tendencies and the “proliferating states”. This project is feasible thanks to the support of the Government of Norway.

Goals

• Discuss the current state of global non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
• Study the pacific development and use of nuclear technology in Latin-American countries.
• Identify how the region can become a key player in the achievement of crucial goals of the NPT.
• Determine if the civil society of Latin-America can become a key actor of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
• Increase the education on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
